During his last visit to Paris, the Maronite Patriarch Bechara al-Rahi stated that “Syrian President Bashar Assad should be given the chance to introduce reform over his fear that the collapse of the regime would lead to the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood to power in Syria.”

Since then, the Maronite Patriarch has been targeted by many politicians, including the French Ambassador Denis Pietton and U.S officials who requested from the Patriarch explanations for his last statements. Added to that, it was reported the Pope has delayed promoting Patriarch al-Rahi to the rank of cardinal due to his controversial statements.

As a response to his critics, the Maronite Patriarch has stated that his words were taken out of context and that the patriarchate “cannot relinquish any party and does not want to eliminate or marginalize any party, because Lebanon needs all its citizens, parties and sects”. He also added that will not abandon the “historical principles” of the church. Last but not least, he requested an official apology from the French Ambassador and refused to meet him until then.

As a sign of support, The Lebanese President of the Republic visited Bkerke last week and declared his backing of Al-Rahi’s statements. Sleiman continued saying that “The patriarch’s visit to France was good, successful and served Lebanon’s interest.”

Meanwhile, Syria is still witnessing daily demonstrations against Bashar El Assad’s regime with the death toll rising to over 2700, according to the UN human right office.
