Beirut+ TV: Lebanon’s Online Animated Satire

, Director of Media Unlimited in Lebanon

It’s tough being a satirist amid countless known and invisible threats, but that hasn’t deterred Maya Zankoul, Toni Yammine and their merry group from poking fun at all things Lebanese via Beirut+ TV. "My dream was for years to create an animated series like the Simpsons," Zankoul said, adding that an initial attempt to secure funding for it failed, so she decided to do it independently.

What that taught her was that the Lebanese market wasn’t ready for an animated TV series and that it didn’t yet make commercial sense because the cost was much higher than the viewership, compared to series abroad. "And the topic is Lebanon, so it’s very limited," she explained. "This is why we decided to go for the Web, do something which will probably reach more people than TV, and the format of two or three minutes long each."

Why You Should Stop Calling It The Middle East

Growing up in the “Middle East” often led me to think what does this term means and where did it originate from? I wondered because the word “middle” refer to the middle of something but what was it? We are in the middle of what? Further, where is East?

Long time age we also used to hear similar terms like Near East and Far East, but we do not hear those terms anymore, which ignited my thinking again. Then the question evolved: if Far and Near East are not being used anymore, why do we still use ‘Middle East’ why this term persists?

It is also important to note that this term is not only used in politics but even in business. Most multinational companies have the term ‘Middle East’ inserted in their divisions that focus on this region.

How Syria Can Achieve Relief for Those Seeking Refuge in Lebanon in Under 48 Hours

by

Syrian Embassy, BEIRUT — On January 13, a minibus organized by Lebanese4Refugees (L4R) arrived through the snow-covered Bekaa Valley into Hamdanieh, a Syrian refugee camp in Al-Majr not far from the Syrian border. One volunteer gasped, “So this is how they live.”

Increasingly at odds with some of their political leaders, a growing number of Lebanese citizens are working to help Syrian refugees forced to seek temporary sanctuary in Lebanon. Mona Ayoub, social media coordinator for L4R explained that “These volunteers are not like those who say that we don’t want refugees in Lebanon. Most Lebanese people are caring, and they feel compassion about this issue.”
