Lebanese President Michel Suleiman reiterated his intention to appeal before the Constitutional Council against any prolonged extension of the parliament’s term.

“I will appeal against any decision for the parliament to extend its term for more than six months, even if all parties agreed on it,” Suleiman said in an interview published Tuesday with Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Jarida.He also said he would appeal against any extension for less than six months, “unless it was justified.”

The Lebanese president also noted that it is possible to hold the elections amid the current security situation.

“Nothing is impossible; if we have the will we can hold the elections despite all the storms hitting the region,” Suleiman said. On Monday, the caretaker cabinet formed the supervisory committee for the upcoming parliamentary elections, while the country’s rival political parties remain deadlocked over reaching a consensus on a new electoral law.
