President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi met the head of Lebanon’s Maronite Church on Sunday, stressing the importance of continuing efforts to achieve national unity and select a president for Lebanon.

Al-Sisi’s meeting in Cairo with Patriarch Bechara Boutros al-Rahi was also attended by the Lebanese ambassador to Egypt, Khalid Zaiada, according to a presidency statement.

According to the statement, the two sides affirmed the good bilateral relations between Egypt and Lebanon, while Al-Sisi expressed Egypt’s interest in maintaining the stability and the security of Lebanon. He said there was a need to resolve divisions and unite around a president.

In a previous meeting President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi expressed Egypt’s keenness on maintaining the security and stability of Lebanon to face the current challenges.

During a meeting with Lebanon’s Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Beshara Boutros  the President stressed the importance of pursuing efforts aiming at choosing a Lebanese President and achieving national concord in a way that leads to the progress of the Arab country.

The meeting was attended by Lebanese Ambassador in Cairo Khaled Ziyada and the metropolitan of the Maronite communities in Egypt and Sudan George Shihan.

Presidential spokesman Alaa Yousef said the Lebanese man of the cloth asserted during the meeting the importance of relations binding Egypt and Lebanon at the official and popular levels, hailing the good conditions in which the Lebanese Maronite community in Egypt live.

Cardinal Beshara Boutros also praised the progress Egypt is making at the political and economic levels , expressing hope for prosperity and progress, said the spokesman, adding that President Sisi welcomed the Lebanese delegation members in their second homeland, Egypt.

The President congratulated Cardinal Beshara Boutros on the inauguration of the Maronite church in Heliopolis after the end of renovation operations.

The President said that Lebanon is able to overcome all obstacles hindering its unity.

In the same vein, Boutros lauded during a meeting earlier in the day with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ahmed el-Tayyeb the role played by Al-Azhar in the face of conflicts in the Arab world.

He added Muslims and Christians have been living together in peace on this land for more than fourteen centuries.
