Growing fears of a vacuum in the Lebanese Army Command will spur international powers to launch a flurry of political activity in September aimed at breaking the yearlong presidential deadlock, according to Western diplomats.

“September seems to be a suitable date for the international community to begin talks with regional and local players to set the stage for the election of a Lebanese president,” a Western diplomat told The Daily Star.

He said the signing of a nuclear deal with Iran, expected by the end of June, would encourage Western states to seek Tehran’s help in electing a Lebanese president.
