Florida was the fastest-growing state in 2022, United States Census Bureau data reveals. The Sunshine State’s population rose 1.9%, to 22.2 million, outpacing second-place Idaho (1.8%) and third-place South Carolina (1.7%). Florida topped the list for the first time since 1957. Since 1946, the population in Florida has grown more than nine times. As impressive as that is, it pales in comparison to Nevada, which has grown by 22 times over that period. Though Florida had the biggest growth by percentage, Texas actually had a greater number of new residents in 2022. California remains the most populous state, ahead of Texas and Florida. New York and Pennsylvania round out the top five. New York lost the most residents by percentage in 2022, followed by Illinois and Louisiana. West Virginia and Hawaii round out the top 5. California lost the second-most residents (113,649). behind New York (180,341).
