SIDON, Lebanon: Fears of a dramatic deterioration in the security of Ain al-Hilweh spiked Monday, after a Palestinian member of the Hezbollah-linked Resistance Brigades was shot dead in the camp, in the fifth such incident this year.
The killing coincided with the visit of a senior Palestinian official. Azzam al-Ahmad, a member of the Fatah Movement’s Central Committee, arrived in Lebanon to meet local officials and discuss means to preserve stability in the camp.
Masked gunmen opened fire on Mujahed Ibrahim Balous shortly before midnight Sunday as he stood at the entrance of his house in the Nabaa neighborhood, according to a security source. Balous, 48, was reportedly rushed to a nearby hospital in Sidon where he died overnight.
